About Hankook Tires Ratings

Required by the government, the NHTSA provides comparative manufacturer information. Tires are subjected to a series of government-mandated tests that measure performance in treadwear, traction and temperature resistance. All testing is done by the tire manufacturer. The NHTSA rating is made up of three components, treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear

The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course. For example, a tire graded 150 would wear one and one half times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100. The relative performance of tires depends upon the actual conditions of their use, however, and many depart significantly from the norm due to variation in driving habits, maintenance practices and differences in road characteristics and climate

Traction

The traction grades, from highest to lowest, are “AA”, “A”, “B”, and “C”, as measured under controlled conditions on specified government test surfaces of asphalt and concrete.

A tire marked C may have poor traction performance. The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on braking (straight-ahead) traction tests and is not a measure of cornering (turning) traction.

Temperature

The NHTSA also provides a measure of resistance to heat generation under normal operating conditions. The test is conducted under predetermined standards for inflation and loading.

Excessive speed, underinflation and overloading, can all cause adverse heat buildup. Sustained high temperatures can reduce tire durability. Resistance grades are branded on the sidewall.

Important: Check your owner’s manual or the Tire and Loading Information Label located on the driver’s side door edge or post to find the correct size for your car or truck.
